Coffee Brewing Guide

At Boulder Organic Coffee we believe that coffee is more than the beverage that you start your day with, it is a taste experience. We believe that coffee brewing is a science and we encourage experimenting to your personal taste preference.

POUR OVER

Pour Overs are best for the mornings when you are craving a more complex cup. We recommend using our single origin coffee to extract the best flavor nuances.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 Minute Brew
Instructions
  • Fill kettle with filtered water, start heating and bring it to 200° F. 
  • Grind 20 grams of coffee beans to a medium grind.
  • Fold the seams of the filter, place in dripper and rinse thoroughly with hot water.
  • Place cup onto scale and then put the dripper on top of the cup. Tare to zero out weight.
  • Add 20 grams of medium grind coffee to the filter and tare to zero out weight.
  • Start pouring water gently and directly into the center of the filter, adding just enough water to saturate the grounds.
  • After 15-20 seconds your bloom will start peaking, continue pouring into the center of the coffee bed, keeping the dripper half full. 
  • Your target weight is 340 grams. 
  • Stir your cup to mix the flavors and ENJOY!

FRENCH PRESS

French Press brewing is ideal when you are craving a full-bodied rustic coffee experience. This brew method is perfect for your weekend brunches, with dessert or if you just like a strong cup of coffee. We recommend brewing with our Boulder Blend Series coffees.

Instructions
  • Bring filtered water to a boil. The amount will vary by size of French Press.
  • Grind 14 grams (or 2 tablespoons) of coffee to a medium grind. Remember that you will need 14 grams for every 8 oz of water used.
  • Pour 200° F water over grounds until the press is ¼ of the way full and stir.
  • Fill the press so the grinds are 1” below the pour spout. 
  • Set your timer for 4 minutes and allow the coffee to steep.
  • Press the filter down and ENJOY!

CHEMEX

If you believe there is science behind brewing the best cup the Chemex brew is for you. It produces a well-balanced perfectly brewed coffee that will bring out the perfect balance of flavors. We recommend using our single origin coffee to extract the best flavor nuances.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 Minute Brew
Instructions
  • Fill kettle with filtered water and begin heating.
  • Place your folded filter into the Chemex with the tri-fold spout-side and rinse with hot water. 
  • Swirl the water in the Chemex to heat the vessel and place on the scale. Tare scale to zero out the weight.
  • Grind 42 grams of coffee to a course grind and add to the Chemex. Tare scale to zero out the weight.
  • Into the center, gently pour 200° F water to soak all of the grounds (approximately 84 grams)
  • After 15-20 seconds the bloom will peak, resume a gentle center pour, keeping the dripper half full. 
  • Your target water weight is 680 grams. Use your last 30 grams to pour in a circle around the edge to draw down all of the grounds together.
  • Swirl coffee to mix the flavors and ENJOY!

COLD BREW COFFEE

As the seasons change and the temperature rises, you may be looking for alternative ways to drink coffee. Cold Brew is a delicious way to start you morning or the perfect afternoon treat.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 Hour & 5 Minutes
Instructions
  • Bring filtered water to a boil. The amount will vary by size of French Press.
  • Grind 28 grams (or 4 tablespoons) of coffee to a medium grind. Remember that you will need 28 grams for every 8 oz of water used.
  • Pour 200° F water over grounds until the press is ¼ of the way full and stir.
  • Fill the press so the grinds are 1” below the pour spout. 
  • Set your timer for 4 minutes and allow the coffee to steep.
  • Press the filter down and transfer coffee to a closed container to cool for 1 hour in the refrigerator. 
  • Put ice into a glass and pour cooled coffee over ice. ENJOY!
NOTE: Use extra ice if pouring hot coffee over ice.
