Fair Trade, Fair Future: How Your Coffee Can Make a Difference

Oct 9, 2026

This October, Boulder Organic Coffee is celebrating Fair Trade Month and the power our everyday choices can have in helping shape a fairer, more sustainable future.

Every cup of coffee has a story. Behind the beans are farmers, workers, families, and communities whose hard work makes the coffee we enjoy each day possible. That’s why choosing coffee with the Fair Trade Certified™ label can mean more than simply choosing what goes into your cup. It’s an opportunity to support the people and places behind it.

What Does Fair Trade Mean?

Fair Trade Certified standards are designed to promote more responsible supply chains by supporting safer working conditions, environmental protections, and opportunities for producers and their communities.

When you look for the Fair Trade Certified label, your purchase helps support a system focused on people and the planet.

Here are a few ways Fair Trade can make a difference:

Empowering Workers
Fair Trade standards are designed to protect workers' rights and promote safe working conditions and sustainable livelihoods. This helps farmers and workers support their families while creating opportunities within their communities.

Protecting the Planet
Great coffee depends on a healthy planet. Fair Trade standards encourage more environmentally responsible and climate-conscious practices that help protect natural resources and support the long-term sustainability of coffee-growing regions.

Strengthening Communities
Fair Trade Community Development Funds give producers a voice in determining how funds are invested based on the needs of their communities. These investments can support projects ranging from education and healthcare to clean water and other community initiatives.

Going Beyond the Cup with The School That Coffee Built

Our commitment to coffee-growing communities also extends through The School That Coffee Built, an ongoing farmer-community initiative supported by Boulder Organic Coffee and Luna Gourmet.

We like to think of it as “giving forward.”

A portion of proceeds from every bag sold helps fund infrastructure, education, and health projects identified directly by the coffee-growing communities we partner with. Rather than deciding from the outside what a community needs, the program focuses on listening to our partners and supporting projects they identify as meaningful for their families and their future.

By investing in schools and other community-led initiatives, our goal is to help create opportunities that can make an impact for generations to come.

Sustainability Is About People, Too

For us, sustainability goes beyond environmental responsibility. It also means thinking about economic opportunity, education, health, and the long-term strength of the communities where coffee is grown.

Through our relationships with coffee-growing communities, we continue to learn how we can better support the next generation while addressing needs today.

It’s a partnership built around listening, learning, and working toward a future where coffee-growing communities can continue to thrive.

Your Everyday Choice Matters

Coffee may be part of your everyday routine, but the choices you make can reach far beyond your morning cup.

This Fair Trade Month, we invite you to purchase with purpose. Look for the Fair Trade Certified label, learn more about where your coffee comes from, and support initiatives that put farmers, workers, communities, and the environment at the center.

Every bag of Boulder Organic Coffee is another opportunity to support the communities behind the coffee we love.
